You've probably heard the phrase "skunk at the picnic" before. Well, here's today's picnic: new figures showing a lower federal deficit for this year. Now, allow me to wrinkle some noses. Make no mistake, a lower deficit is a good thing. But it's not enough of a good thing. Until we get a grip on entitlements and the national debt, we're not making progress on our nation's finances. That would be true even if we'd managed to balance the budget this year, because enormous liabilities are sitting out there, waiting for us and our children. And people really need to understand that while there's still time. 1 comment on this entry

Changing Expectations
»A new report finds the main problem in getting the public to deal with our fiscal problems isn't opposition to tax increases or spending cuts -- it's their lack of trust in the government to spend their money wisely. |
Re: Skunk at the Picnic
We should spend our government budget wisely. The top priority of most country is to stabilize the economic financial system that is why sometimes we had to cut budget on some other government sector such as the defense. Defense Secretary Robert Gates unveiled an idea to replace defense contractors entirely, with the budget providing for hiring 13,000 civil servants to start with. Granted, part of the cash advance loans of the stimulus was to create jobs, but this creates and takes away simultaneously. Part of the budget is an additional $5 billion for jets, and more funding for the withdrawal from Iraq and increasing activity in Afghanistan. After we heard so many promises to cut government spending, we now are on the hook for more cash advance loans in the defense budget.
