Economy takes a beating
With rising prices and growing unemployment, workers have been struggling to maintain a steady path to success. The suffering of our nation’s crises has led to many downfalls and drawbacks that every one of us in the United States suffers from. Recently, the United States has entered into a deep recession that has sparked a trillion dollar deficit.
Struggling to stay secure The rising prices of our economic resources have put most of us in a bind and are forcing all of us to make sacrifices. Struggling to purchase food or pump gas were the least of our worries in the recent past. Our nation is now rethinking situations that should be dealt with such as what we can afford and what we can do without. Some families are putting away their top priorities, such as school, simply to stay alive. Is it fair that the everyday person is being forced to adjust their lives because of the error of a few? In order for us to provide a safe environment we call home, health care costs are being cut to cover essential needs such as food, shelter, and other basic needs most of us have taken for granted for a long time. Making decisions that involve wearing clean clothes or what days of the week we should eat, are taking a toll in the United States today and will continue to do so into the indefinite future.
Short-range and long-range effects The short-term problem we are facing is the current budget deficit that is likely to sky rocket to $1 trillion this year which is dangerous and threatening to our society. The long-term issue is the privilege spending for the boomers which can be even more frightening to the people and our society. We normally don’t think about the $1 trillion deficit being a permanent measure for the U.S. We assume that the economy will recover the stimulus bailout, but what we aren’t likely to think about is the deficit measures increasing putting our nation at high risk to stay alive. The financial crises have amplified within the past few years, but means of stopping it will only get harder.
Medicare and Social Security is a couple of long term issues that have recently changed the lives we live today. Rising health care costs has put a lot of us in a situation we don’t want to deal with. President Obama has stated that the Obama administration will tackle health care costs first, but expanding the health coverage only increases the cost which soon has to be brought under control. “I see a budget as something that will solve every problem or address any issue,” says President Obama. Obama continues to have high hopes for our nation and the people within (Obama’s speech, lasting prosperity CNN).
Recession equals domestic violence on the rise Not only does our nation have to worry about the staggering health care costs and social security issues, we also have to worry about the rise in domestic violence. During tough economic times, women have a tendency to feel trapped and abused more than ever. Like most people, the thought of not being able to provide financially can put a damper on parents and their children. The decrease in the amount of jobs available only allows abusers more opportunities to be present. “It is not uncommon for abusers to keep victims economically enslaved, seizing paychecks and denying all access to money. When that income shrinks during hard times, the victim becomes even easier to control,” says Karen Oehme, director of the Institute for Family Violence Studies at Florida State University (Global Envision). The recession has put funding for the domestic violence shelters in a tough situation. More violence seems to be appearing which has put a stop to the amount of people the shelters can take and has turned many people in need away, making this situation unbearable for the people trying to help save lives and also for the lives of the people this is affecting. Once our economic crises have slowed down, hopes of domestic violence will decrease. Instead of turning people away, a more welcoming environment will be applicable.
The economic crises are, by no means, something we shouldn’t worry about. In fact, this is a very serious circumstance that can last for years to come. Not only is the United States suffering from lack of jobs which means lack of money, but there are also deaths rising because of domestic violence. Doing everything possible to help save our nation can save the lives of many and can help keep us secure.

Jessica,
I like the quote that you incorporated into your essay by President Obama. I would have to agree with him; a budget would be very helpful. I also like that you incorporated social issues into your essay that are a result of our financial crisis. It is important to see the impacts. I enjoyed reading your essay.

Re: Economy Takes a Beating
I belive it's important to think about the things that are effected by the economic crises such as the death that can take part because of our situation. It's sad to think about how it really is effecting those out there who are in need of help the most, such as these victims who have no where else to go. They look forward to a domestic violence shelter and when they get shut out form it, now what?

Re: Economy Takes a Beating
Jessica,
You have a very interesting perspective on how the deficit problem will affect families, more specifically women, in the future. I had never thought of it that way before. You do a nice job presenting all the information, and it seems you really did your homework before you wrote this. Everything is cited well, and you did a nice job conveying both your interests and data to back it up.

Re: Economy Takes a Beating
Jessica,
I agree with much of your opinion. The United States is definately within an economic crisis. And i believe you hit home with your description of how the families of America are being forced to change lifestyles and decisions because of the current economic state that the U.S. has placed itself in. But I do not agree that the current situation was created due to the decsions of a few people or even a select group. I believe we as a nation are all to blame for our current economic issues. The debt of our country is increased by the spending of our government yes, but we as a people have not taken the time to rise up and call for regulation.
That is the only point i can disagree upon, excellent work.

I had never thought of these issues in regard to domestic violence. You really have some unique views. Thanks for sharing them. -DeZ
Re: Re: Economy Takes a Beating
I dont disagree with the fact that we as people have not taken the time to rise up and call for regulation. I basically am stating some things that is happening the people that live in this nation. Most of us have to re evaluate some of the things we do in order to maintain our money.
