Six Steps for LeadersIt's Time to Pay Our Bills, the new report from Public Agenda, suggests six steps leaders can take to build public support for real budget reform. The steps are pretty broad -- what specifically do you think leaders can do to build public trust? What would a presidential candidate have to say to make you believe he was serious about getting this situation under control?

Changing Expectations
»A new report finds the main problem in getting the public to deal with our fiscal problems isn't opposition to tax increases or spending cuts -- it's their lack of trust in the government to spend their money wisely. |
Re: Six Steps for Leaders
I would add a seventh step: Stop using the budget as a platform for partisan bickering. I believe leadership loses enormous trust when we, the people, hear partisan comments (especially the blame game), selective use of incomplete date, and failure to admit that special interest money makes certain budget proposals very difficult to legislate. A frank admission of the difficulty in accomodating the various budgetary interests would be a breath of fresh air. If the problem can be named, it can be solved. Courage anyone?
