The Youth is Lost

When I started thinking about what I wanted to be the topic of this essay to be, I came across many ideas, but none seemed to stick in my mind as something that I really cared about. And that’s when it dawned on me, I didn’t care about a lot of the issues that were going on in our country at the moment. It sounds so sad to say that the country that I support and live in, is going through loads of economic stress and troubles, and it doesn’t even faze me. I asked a large group of my friends what they thought about  Americas current financial crisis, and all but 2 of them gave me almost the exact same response. “ I am too busy to think about that, I have more important things on my mind”. The youth of the nation is struggling right now, most of us don’t care about our nations struggles unless they are affecting us directly in a way we can feel or see.

I am currently taking an Economics course at Emporia State University, and this course has been an incredible ride for me. It has opened my eyes to the world in a new way. I see the news and it actually makes me concerned about my future. It makes me second guess my spending habits, and it especially makes me concerned about how I will invest my money in the future. Healthcare is always a hot topic in today’s society, and there are so many different opinions on the situation. In a critical health issues class I am also taking we had to do a debate on if healthcare should be rationed by age or if it should be done by another way. Doing research on this topic helped me realize how serious this situation has become in our world today, and that it really is something that needs to be taken care of soon, before it drains more and more money out of our nations money.

I hope that other college students, and other youth members around the nation can become involved in their countries future, we need to speak up and give our opinions, we are the future of this country and we should be helping decide on how to help fix the current mess that we have gotten ourselves into the last few decades. The classes that I have taken this year at Emporia State have definitely opened my eyes into a whole new world, I hope that the decisions that I will make in the future based on our nations economy will be the right ones, and that my opinions will be respected like they are now. I just hope that the youth in the world will step up soon and make a difference in the world, its our chance to be heard.

Re: Youth of the Nation

Cole,

Regrettably, the youth has been negatively affected by the financial crisis. One major concern that first comes to my mind concerning youth and the financial crisis is education. With the financial crisis, tuitions will be higher, and thus, many people will find it difficult to remain in college. Unless a change occurs, this would unconstructively influence our future. It’s encouraging to realize that Economics has had such an impact on you, as I know it has certainly impacted me quite a bit as well.

Re: Youth of the Nation

You make such a sad but true point. Many of our peers have no ideas about the true crisis that America is facing. And what makes this so much worse is we are the future who has to start stepping forth and making the change. Hopefully many of our peers do begin to look more indepth to this situation and start to create solutions.

Re: Youth of the Nation

Hey Cole,

Your points were so true, our generation is very clueless about the economic crisis that we are experiencing. I am in agreeance with you that we should pay more attention to what is going on around us, and need to make a difference in the world, because our opinions do matter.

Great Job,
Whitney Franklin

Re: Youth of the Nation

Your title really caught my attention. Our youth really have no clue whats going on, I too am guilty. I agree education is key to solving this problem.

good job

Re: Youth of the Nation

Cole,
You did an excellent job of assessing how out of touch the younger generation of America is when concerned with the economic crisis. I fully agree with you in the statement that we need to make a greater effort to educate the younger generations for one thing so they can a better understanding, and secondly so that as they get older they can help make contributions to easing the economy.

Re: Youth of the Nation

Cole,

I think your essay is very good and I could not agree more. I was right there with you are your friends. I did not pay attention to the news. I did not care about the economy really because I did not think that it effected me at all really. I am also, in Economics this semester and it has done the same for me. It has opened my eyes to things that I really never thought I would be interested in as a college student or until I was older and "needed" to. I agree with you also in the fact that I hope more college students and young people in general start to realize that the "boring economy" stuff does affect them and their future! Good job!

Re: Youth of the Nation

I really admire the title. and how you used that you are taking an econ class and how it opnened your mind to understanding our finaical crisis. also that you encourage more youth to be involved in thier country positive and negative issues.

Re: Youth of the Nation

You have made some very good points about how we young adults don't know how bad the economy is. It is very had to do something about an issue we don't understand but we can't ignore the situation.

Re: Youth of the Nation

You are absolutely correct about the youth not knowing about how much of a crisis we are all in. It is sad but sometimes the truth should be kept a secret. Nice job on the essay!

Re: Youth of the Nation

It makes me wonder, how would one decide who needs certain health care options the most and who doesn't! Everybody needs to go to the doctor at some point and when elderly people have more than one health concern and need to visit a doctor(s) often how's that supposed to work??!
